To protect nails against rust and corrosion, a special type of nail is developed called galvanized nails. Galvanized nails use zinc oxide to coat the surface of the iron or steel, a fine white dust, because this element does not breakdown the surface of the metal beneath and does not tear down the integrity of the nails. It prevents the occurrence of oxidation; thus rust and corrosion is also prevented.

They are commonly used in constructing buildings and several other establishments. Most homeowners used galvanized nails for outdoor projects. So how do you choose the right galvanized nails for your construction needs? Here are some tips to help you get started.

Use galvanized nails that undergoes a process called hot-dip galvanization.

There are three types of galvanization, namely; electro, mechanical and hot-dip galvanization. The most popular of which is the hot-dip galvanization to make sure that the iron and steel surfaces are protected from corrosion. In this process, the steel need to pass through molten zinc at 460 degrees temperature. When this kind of coating is exposed, it forms a layer of zinc carbonate or zinc oxide. This prevents the steel or the iron of galvanized nails from being exposed to elements from the atmosphere that can cause it to rust.

Choose galvanized nails with thick coatings. This is because thin coated galvanized nails cannot withstand surface abrasions for longer period of time.

Avoid buying, electroplated galvanized nails if possible especially if you will be using it for redwood, treated lumber or cedar. This is because the chemicals in the woods will overpower the zinc coating thus leaving the nails rusty. You can opt to using mechanically galvanized nails instead.
